There is more to ladies golf clubs than pretty colors on the heads and grips, many clubs are the same as those for men, but the weighting may be slightly different to allow for the different swing styles experienced by some female players. Whether the clubs are woods, irons or hybrids, ladies golf clubs undergo the same engineering for design as clubs for men and youth.
Bennington, Burton and Nancy Lopez are just a few of the names widely associated
with ladies golf clubs and accessories available for them are also designed with
the women in mind. However, when women were first entering the golf world
typically the clubs were the same ones used by the men, with the only difference
possibly being shorter shafts. The difference in their stance and in their swing
soon became apparent. Manufacturers saw their entry into the sport as a new
outlet for their market and began working on designs that could be used by those
with a possibly a less forceful swing.
However, do not tell the ladies that golf is a men’s sport as the Ladies
Professional Golf Association, LPGA, has been around since 1950 and is the
oldest women’s professional sports organization in the country. The weekly tours
may not receive the national attention as some other sports, but the quality of
the game, thanks to their talent as well as the designs of ladies golf clubs,
puts them on the same professional level as other sports.
Famous Names Help Grow Ladies Golf...
Names like Nancy Lopez, Dottie Mochrie and Kathy Whitworth stand out as some of
the champions from the early days of LPGA events. Through 1961, the big prize
was the Vare Trophy; Babe Zaharias had the most wins in 1950 and 1951 and also
led the money winners with around $15,000 both years. Nancy Lopez remains on the
top 20-career money winners list despite being out of the circuit for about 20
years.
Other than perhaps the style or color of the bag, looking inside it will be hard
to tell the difference in ladies golf clubs and mens, as they carry the same
clubs. Most golf rules pertaining to men also pertain to the ladies and they are
responsible for knowing the rules as well as the size and weight limitation
place on ladies golf clubs and the number they are allowed to have their bag
during tournament play.
